New Plugin Release for WordPress: Move Comments

I have released a new plugin for the WordPress users. I was surprised when I realized that WordPress does not offer a way of moving comments between posts or pages. Move Comments is a WordPress plugin that allows comments to be moved from one page or post to another.

I spent some time tweaking the interface, trying to make it simple and efficient. Comments are filtered by post or page that they belong to and multiple comments can be selected and move to the target page or post.

Visit the Move Comments home page for more info and the download link.

Site Downtime

You may have noticed that for the last four days (at least), the site has been experiencing terrible downtimes. I have contacted DreamHost, my hosting company, and reported the issue every time.

However, they are unable to trace the source of the problem. Their current suggestion is to move the site to another apache instance the next time that the site goes down.

If you notice that the site is down again, please drop me an email or a comment in this post (when the site comes back on) with the time and date as this will help me and the hosting company to diagnose the issue.

Site Updated To WP2.2.2 and Widgets

Until yesterday, I was running WordPress 2.0.x as the site engine. I was thinking of upgrading to 2.1.x but I stumbled upon this post, that said that the 2.1 version won’t get any updates. Therefore, I took the plunge and upgraded to 2.2.2.

The process was quite painless. So far, I had to modify only my theme. I am not sure if widgets were added to the WP core in 2.1 or if it is a 2.2 feature (in 2.0 an additional plugin was required). I tracked down a widget for UWT, uploaded it on the /plugins/widgets/ directory, enabled it on the plugins page and then added it to the sidebar.

The widgets implementation in the WP admin screens is quite messy as one plugin may have more than one widget. These shouldn’t be included in the plugins page, but instead they should have their own page. Also, in the WP file structure, the widgets directory should be at the same level as the themes and plugins and not as a sub-directory of the latter.

The revision of the Social Bookmarks that I am planning to release (when it is ready) is working fine in 2.2.2 with no extra coding lines. I have installed it on the site so that you can have a taster of it. I am very tempted to write a widget for the plugin, but I haven’t decided if I should bundle it with the plugin or release it as an additional download.

If you spot anything that does not work or behaves in a weird way, please let me know, so I that I can investigate further.

Funny Photos

I am trying to clean up my inbox and it occurred to me that I should publish the funny pictures that I occasionally get on my email.

Therefore, I have created two albums with funny photos.

  • The first one contains funny photos with no specific topic.
  • The second one is dedicated to the 300 movie .

Every now and then, I will be publishing a posts with new funny photos.

ESftp plugin for Eclipse

ESftp logoChris, the developer of ESftp , recently updated his Eclipse plugin to version 1.1.0, which fixes a lot of problems introduced with the 1.0.9 release.

This version, gives the ability to login using KeyboardAuthentication modes for SFTP servers, so if you were having to modify your ssh_config to login, this has just fixed your problem, also it might fix some other problems which people had with their SFTP servers that they never attributed to this problem.

He is now working on ESftp 1.1.1 which will have the following features:

It has a remote site browser, so you can browse the remote site and pick your site root without having to remember it off the top of your head. In esftp 1.1.2, A View will be put together which will incorporate the same site browser, but like dreamweaver, will let you manipulate remote files from your project, which is something that has been in high demand.

It supports FTP, plain FTP at the moment, although there are plans to allow FTP TLS and FTP SSL in esftp 1.1.2, or maybe 1.1.3 depending on demand.

The preferences system has been totally rewritten and is now doing it’s job properly, you can restore defaults and have it work predictably. You can define workspace preferences and have those automagically import into all projects if they are not overridden by specific project properties.

Also, esftp and esftp-lib have been merged back together, simplifying the installation process.

The one thing which is on his list of things to do is to allow setting the chmod status of the files which are uploaded, someone requested that they would like to set them to some default that they know would work, however this is on the list of things for esftp 1.1.2, it might not actually be possible with the ftp library that it is currently using (ftp4che), if anyone knows a better LGPL or GPL library apart from apache-commons, drop him an email.
